Hello `now alias`, Custom Domains and Instant SSL

Guillermo Rauch (@rauchg)

Today we're introducing now alias and with it the easiest way to take your deployments to production. Instantly and securely.

To install or upgrade now to 0.15.0 run:

▲ npm install -g now

This version features:

  • Improved file sync, which is now up to 2x faster.
  • A new email prompt for --login with autocompletion (open sourced here).
  • Fixed a bug when combining option flags (like -f) with parameters to commands.
  • The much-requested now alias which brings custom domains and subdomains!

Custom domains and subdomains

If you go to https://zeit.domains you'll see a simple website we deployed with now.

How did we do it? With just one command of course!

bash
 ~/my-app $

now alias serves two critical purposes:

  • Introducing user-friendly and memorable URLs.
  • Upgrading code from "development" / "staging" to production with zero downtime.

As you can see, now creates an environment that seamlessly unifies all the stages of development.

Instant free SSL

Notice that one of the steps shown above is certificate provisioning.

When usign a custom domain, now automatically invokes Let's Encrypt on our servers so that you never have to deal with issuing authorities, certificate signing requests (CSRs), key management, renewals, endless fees…

All your deployments are instanteously secure at no additional cost.

Easy setup

The now client verifies that your DNS is properly configured when setting up a custom domain.

All you have to do is make sure that the custom domain or subdomain you're configuring points to alias.zeit.co by using CNAME.

To configure apex records (e.g.: domain.com without www), we recommend you use DNS servers that support the ALIAS records.

Account settings and billing

I'm very proud to introduce the /account section of our website.

In addition to setting up your billing details and account upgrade, make sure to sign in to pick your favorite unique `/username`! Hint: lots of upcoming features will require one.

We are excited about https://zeit.co becoming a portal to the cloud that's intuitive, user-friendly and fast. And most importantly, simple.

In the two months since its launch, now has seen tremendous industry adoption and community love. I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and belief in our platform.

Let's go live!
